"Admiral Lord Godfrey Borland"
Scottish School. No signature discernable. Estimate date 1850’s

This three quarter length portrait is a Victorian “oilette” , an oil painting on canvas board.

Such paintings as these were the mainstay of art produced for the growing ‘middle classes’ of Victorian Britain who desired to be associated with a distinguished ancestral lineage.

There is no artist signature, but it is still a fine rendition of a high ranking officer of the British Navy. The title plate at the bottom of the picture indicates “Admiral Lord Godfrey Borland” and as such is ready to grace any parlour.
